The human mind is made up of the conscious and the subconscious mind. It is frequently compared to an iceberg. The conscious mind is represented by the tip of the iceberg that is above the surface and the subconscious is represented by the vast part of the iceberg that is below the surface.
Hypnosis puts your conscious mind, which processes everyday thoughts, in the back seat so that you and the hypnotherapist can communicate directly with your subconscious mind.
Hypnosis is a very relaxed state of mind that is similar to the feeling you get when you fall asleep. However, hypnosis is not the same as sleep. Because you remain alert and attentive at all times, it has more in common with the deeply relaxed state experienced in meditation.
In hypnosis you are aware of what is going on around you. You are fully conscious but tune out most of the stimuli around you, focussing intently on the subject at hand to the near exclusion of any other thought. It is similar to daydreaming or being absorbed in a good book.
Hypnosis is perfectly safe. You remain in control at all times. In fact, when hypnosis is used in hypnotherapy you become more empowered and in greater control of your life overall. Because your subconscious mind works for your benefit and protection, you cannot do anything against your will or your principles when in hypnosis. Nor can you disclose anything you wish to keep personal. You will not reveal anything in hypnosis that you would not tell someone in the waking state. Because you are always in control in hypnosis, it is not possible to become "stuck" in the hypnotic state. You can open your eyes and retrurn to a state of wakefullness at any time.
The main physical senstations you may become aware of in hypnosis are a feeling of heaviness in your limbs and feeling of warmth throughout your body as you become relaxed.
The medical applications of hypnosis in dental work, childbirth and surgery are widely acknowledged. Patients who undergo hypnotic anaesthesia have faster recovery rates, lower mortality and less bleeding in surgery than those who are given pharmaceutical anaesthetics.
Hypnotherapy techniques are used to assist personal development as well as for setting and achieving goals including improved sports performance. It is particularly popular with golfers.
Because of the link between mind and body, hypnotherapy is frequently employed as a powerful treatment for many physical conditions. HypnoHealing is an effective method of improving health, not only because it reduces stress, but also because it focuses the resources of the subconscious mind on the site of a health problem. It harnesses the body's own healing powers and channels them towards resolving the health issue.
